Compliance

Throughout our nearly 20 years in practice, we have helped countless organizations untangle messes related to loss of tax-exempt status, tax abatements, policy violations, and much more. At some point, nearly every nonprofit organization is going to encounter a compliance issue. When it happens, we’re here to help.

Legal Counsel
We serve as general counsel for many nonprofit organizations as they navigate a wide range of legal issues. From short-term support for a minor issue to longer-term needs, our team can help you assess the issue and determine the best course of action.

Reinstatements of Tax Exempt Status
Sometimes a nonprofit loses their tax-exempt status due to failure to file their annual Form 990 or other violations of federal guidelines. In these situations, we can help guide an organization through the reinstatement process and ensure all forms are filed correctly.

Tax Abatements
When a nonprofit organization incorrectly files their initial IRS paperwork or receives a fine or penalty due to inaccurate annual reports, we can help the organization work with the IRS to correct the filings and potentially reduce the taxes or penalty.

Embezzlement
A nonprofit’s financial policies and practices are designed to reduce risk and prevent issues like embezzlement, but sometimes it still happens, either because the organization didn’t follow their policies or because one person had too much control. Issues of embezzlement may require legal action against the individual, as well as additional reporting to the IRS and other federal and state agencies.
